Case Studies

Full customer case studies are currently being written up. In the meantime here are a few tasters…

Cutting costs and maintaining quality:

Control valve manufacturer Bifold wanted to drive changes in their manufacturing processes which would cut costs and deliver measurable improvements in reliability and performance. Using ShapeSpace 3D search technology to search their entire part reference library and identify all parts manufactured from the same raw material, Bifold were very quickly able to consolidate manufacturing processes and improve efficiencies.

5% reduction in new part count:

FMB Oxford have used ShapeSpace software and found it valuable in finding and re-using existing parts. On one project containing around 600 unique components, they recorded that by using ShapeSpace 30 existing parts were reused; a 5% reduction in new part count, which would not have been possible otherwise. This demonstrated major cost savings by reducing design time, reducing procurement effort and increasing quality by reusing already designed components.

More than 1000 duplicate parts found:

ShapeSpace worked with a large USA defence company, migrating between PLM systems. We identified duplicate CAD files in their standard part library and classified a number of groups of similar standard parts. Their library of over 8000 parts contained 1000 duplicates which were removed. Remaining parts were grouped according to their geometric similarity, and a groups of similar parts generated, all viewable in the 3D shape search software.

18% duplicate parts found:

In a recent project at one medium sized Scottish manufacturing company looking to implement a PLM system, we found that in a population of about 40,000 parts, 7,500 were exact duplicates and 4,000 were near duplicates. These consisted of:

  • file duplicates’ where the same file had been copied into numerous locations,
  • ‘part duplicates’ where identical parts had been allocated different part numbers and
  • ‘near duplicates’  which were groups of parts which could be rationalised. They may, for instance, have identical  geometry except for a differing hole pattern.

Reducing production line downtime:

A Scottish manufacturing company drastically reduced the downtime of its production line by using ShapeSpace’s 3D search technology to rapidly identify a broken part. By using ShapeSpace’s advanced part identification software, the part was replaced and downtime reduced.
